NearShore Technology partnered with Georgia Tech LBAT (Language for Business and Technology) to provide fourteen study abroad students the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the Yucatán history and culture. This five-week program began in Mexico City and ended in NearShore’s headquartered city, Merida. The students were each paired with a NearShore employee to work on daily projects that provided a comprehensive overview of environmental, economic, social and cultural development of the region. Required to only speak Spanish, the students interviewed government officials, village locals and spent a day teaching at a village school. With exposure to High-Tech industries, direct interactions with local residences and gaining a better understanding of the region’s culture, the LBAT program creates an invaluable experience that NearShore Technology is privileged to be a part of.
“We want to thank you (Dr. Riddle) for all of the attention you gave us, the quality of the details, as well as all of the time you spent with us, and the vision you shared through your own experiences as a graduate of Georgia Tech living in Mexico. Also, that you opened the doors to your house, your company, and most importantly, your heart,” said a Georgia Tech LBAT participant.
The program was led by Georgia Tech’s Professor of Spanish and Associate Chair for Research and Graduate Programs in the School of Modern Languages, Dr. Vicki Galloway, and Associate Professor of Spanish, Dr. Juan Rodríguez. The program was hosted by NearShore’s Chief Operating Officer of Latin America and Georgia Tech graduate, Dr. Yancy W. Riddle.
“I have had an unbroken 22-year relationship with Georgia Tech and began connecting Nearshore with Georgia Tech about three years ago. I’m thrilled the relationship between Georgia Tech and NearShore is providing students with international experiences through the LBAT and other events we have planned. It was amazing to see how independent and capable the students were operating in a foreign language and foreign culture. It is a real privilege for me to be able to invest in the next generation. We are already planning for next year’s LBAT in Mexico! We are building on the momentum,” said Dr. Riddle, Chief Operating Officer of Latin America of NearShore Technology.
